HUNTINGBURG — A new auction business started by a Huntingburg local will soon serve all of Southern Indiana.
Jud Collett, a local F.C. Tucker realtor, grew up going to auctions with his family, and said his new business is a much-needed addition to the area.
“Just listening to the auctioneer and seeing and meeting so many people, it’s an atmosphere that’s hard to explain if you’ve never been to one,” he said.
Collett began working with auctioneers as a teen but had never thought of starting his own business until last year when he attended an auction and several people asked when he was going to start doing it himself.
The business, called Collett Auctions, will have both live and online auctions and will feature simulcasting, which will allow people to see Collett live from their computers or devices.
“(Auctioning) has come a long way, with online auctions you can buy from anywhere in the world now,” he said. “Last year, I heard people say they’d never buy online, and now there’s people who tried out online auctions that they’re saying they’ll never go in person again … I want to be able to bring back the family feel of the live auction, but you also have to keep up with the times.”
As a realtor, Collett can also serve as a “one-stop shop” for people who are looking to clear out household items and sell their house, such as people who are looking to move their older parents into a new, smaller home.
Back when he was a teenager, auctioning mostly included family antiques. Collett said he worries a little about how antiques, such as china passed down through generations, may not be valued as much by younger generations now than back then. But he’s going to do all he can to create the same atmosphere that he originally fell in love with, he said.
