The Youngstown State track and field program competed in four events across two meets Thursday, posting four new personal-bests and an event victory en route to a successful first day at the Drake Relays and Hillsdale College “Gina” Relays.
Representing the Penguins’ only entry in the event, Derek Basinger tallied a personal-best 14:52.12 while securing an event victory in the men’s 5000m run at the Hillsdale College “Gina” Relays.
Drake University Relays
Kicking off the Drake Relays for the Penguins, senior CJ Schumacher posted a 1:58.71 in the men’s 800m run to finish 18th in the event.
Morgan Cole clocked a new personal-best (17:02.95) in the women’s 5000m run to take the silver medal in her heat. Cole’s run sits as the third-fastest women’s 5000m run time in YSU history and the second-best time of the season in the Horizon League.
Hillsdale College “Gina” Relays
Julia Magliocca posted new personal-best in the women’s 5000m run, clocking a 18:08.65 – 21 seconds faster than her previous best time. Magliocca finished 13th in event, ahead of 64 entries.
Shaving almost three minutes off his previous personal best, Matthew Mangus captures a runner-up finish in the men’s 10000m run with a time of 31:27.16. Mangus’ time is second-best run in the Horizon League this season.
The Penguins are back in action tomorrow, April 23, for day two of the Drake Relays and Hillsdale College “Gina” Relays.
